Using Wrought Iron Railing

Wrought iron has properties that make it both malleable and tough due to its low carbon content. Because of its many applications, wrought iron home decor products are very popular for indoor decoration as well as outdoor decoration. Wrought iron railings are an especially popular decor item that can be used inside as well as outside. Wrought iron railing offers great designs adorning the house with the capacity to withstand the weather for a long time.

Wrought iron rails are not a new concept. Use of wrought iron railing dates back throughout various historic times for decorating some of the most famous castles and Victorian homes of all time.  The earliest iron railings date back to the thirteenth century. The refinement in the design and style came in the seventeenth century when Britain put its creativity to use and created the English style of wrought iron railing designs. Today, the styles we know for wrought iron products are mainly inspired by the antique English designs style.

There are many types of wrought iron railings. The most common types of wrought iron railings include stair railings, commercial railings, interior railings, exterior railings, balcony railings and garden railings.  From bar shaped to club headed to floral designs to spear headed to flat headed, wrought iron railings are available in numerous sizes and shapes, fulfilling nearly every decorative requirement.

Custom wrought iron railings are available for those who want special designs that aren't commercially available. When it comes to specifications for custom designs, be sure to let the craftsman know the quality of wrought iron you desire. Specify that you would like “puddled wrought iron.” Also, make sure that fire welding is used instead of electric welding to put the rails together.

As for maintenance, wrought iron railing fixtures do not require much preservation due to the weather resistant properties of the metal. Regular maintenance and immediately addressing any issue will help to considerably lengthen the life of iron railing. Pay close attention to the joints and curves in the metal railings. Water and dust generally accumulation in these areas can lead to weakening. To combat rusting, dry any wet areas of wrought iron railings after cleaning. You may periodically apply a rust resistant paint over the joints to keep them looking fresh and new.
